How to Cook Shredded Pork Shoulder

This is a recipe my mother in law gave to me. It’s very easy. The only thing is that it takes 6-8 hours or so to prepare the entire thing. So I would recommend you start early in the day so that it can be served by dinner.

Screen Shot 2014-06-01 at 6.35.37 PMI started at around noon, then took the kiddos and hubby to the pool and came back to finish it all. Here’s how you cook and shred roasted pork shoulder:

First, I looked for Fresh Pork Shoulder in the grocery store. Either that or Pork Butt works too. It’s not an actual butt, so don’t worry. Butt is part of the shoulder meat.

Take a big pot (big enough to fit the entire thing without cutting it into small pieces). Put the pork inside and brown it with salt, pepper and garlic powder. First do one side, then turn it over and do the other side. Make sure to put salt, pepper and garlic powder on both sides so that the flavors goes evenly on all sides. This entire process took me about 15 mins. Around 6-7 minutes on each side.

After you’ve browned the meat a bit, it’s time to put it in the oven.  Set the oven at 325 degrees fahrenheit. Pour one cup of water all over the meat before covering it with aluminum foil, then let it cook in the oven for around 5-6 hours. It may take longer depending on the size of your pork, so make sure you check it before serving it.


I decided to pair the roasted pork with mashed potatoes and vegetables today. Feel free to make it with whatever else you want. Roasted potatoes or even rice would be great as well.

Egreis GjergjaniWhen it comes to cooking, I go for the easy route. With Gio around, I don’t have time to make things from scratch. Nor would I want to, cuz it just takes way too long. So if you are practical like me, perhaps this will work for you too. I bought Simply Potatoes “Traditional Mashed Potatoes” and cooked them on the stove top, on a small pan. I made sure to stir it often and within a few minutes it was done 🙂

I like to mix some butter and shredded cheese with the mashed potatoes after they’re done. It tastes really good!!! I know it’s not the healthiest thing to do, but I like the taste. (You can also microwave if you really have no time. But I try to stay away from the microwave as much as possible).

Egreis GjergjaniAs for the vegetables, I bought the Steamfresh Chef’s Favorite package with Broccoli, Cauliflower, Carrots and Cheese Sauce. I emptied the entire bag into a saucepan and added 2 tablespoons of water. I covered and cooked it with medium heat for about 15 minutes, stirring it occasionally. (I simply followed the instructions on the bag). You can microwave these as well. The one thing I did do that the package didn’t mention was put some salt and pepper on top of it for just a little bit of taste.

In the end I mixed all of the vegetables with the mash potatoes together. The reason I do that is because the kiddos at home hate anything in the category: “vegetable”. So I have had to come up with ways to hide the green veggies in the meal. Usually when I mix them with the rest of the food they don’t think about it so much and end up eating and liking it. By kiddos I mean hubby too. He’s worse than them 🙂

After the pork is done in the oven, take it out and with two forks you will shred it to small pieces. You will know the meat is ready to be shredded by how soft it is. It’s so ready to fall apart you won’t even have a hard time shredding it. I cut the pork in small pieces so that I could shred it easily. I took an empty container and piece by piece I shredded the entire meat on there.


Then I poured some of the juice that was left over from the meat, all over the pork and even a little bit on the mashed potatoes. This is what it looked like in the end:
